Wisdom is knowing in depth the great metaphors of meaning. ~Carl Jung
It is our nature to forever seek fulfillment in life. We pursue this goal with tremendous passion, and with as much desire and life force as we can summon. Yet our longings and dreams seem endless. Sadly, our dashed hopes and disappointments can often seem just as never-ending. But there is good news. We all have the power within us to become free – to be liberated from the personal and collective psycho-spiritual dream that binds us and keeps us separated from our true self and our most fulfilling place in the planetary and cosmic scheme.~ Tav Sparks, The Power Within: Becoming, Being, and the Holotropic Paradigm
Holotropic means moving towards wholeness. Throughout human history, men and women have discovered or invented ways to access a deeper level of consciousness – through meditation, plant medicines, chemical hallucinogens, breathing, dancing, fasting, etc. Experiencing this ‘non-ordinary’ state enables us to know (in many different ways) that which is usually unknown or mysterious.
Originated by Stanislav Grof, Holotropic Breathwork™ provides a safe and caring container for deep exploration in non-ordinary states of consciousness. Participants use their breath to access these non-ordinary states and, in doing so, surrender to a natural process of spiritual and psychological healing. This healing takes many, often mysterious, forms and becomes a collaboration of mind, body, and spirit.
Holotropic Breathwork is greatly recommended for people seeking meaning and context in the universe and in their lives, people who want to heal from trauma, people who want to access and expand their creativity, and people who are looking for a non-denominational, non-religious, substance-free spiritual path. Long time participants report great positive changes in their lives and a sense of deep spiritual fulfillment.
Holotropic Breathwork is a simple practice, wherein the breather lies on a mat and breathes. The process is helped by music, and the breather is taken care of by facilitators and sitters. After the session, breathers are encouraged to talk about their experiences and to do some art work to facilitate integration. The large but safe container provided by the facilitators gives the breather permission to access aspects of his or her psyche that might otherwise feel unsafe.
Holotropic Breathwork is contraindicated for pregnant women or anyone with severe cardiovascular problems or severe schizophrenia.
